Many students in the Sixth Form experience Higher Education through Aim Higher. Three of our students illustrate how much they have enjoyed the challenge of a week in Summer School.
Richard Walker:
"I spent my week at Manchester Met. University, and within a short time I met many new people and did so many new things. We had Karaoke nights, social times, went to the Trafford Centre, the cinema, bowling and for a posh meal to name just a few. To summarise all we did in one paragraph is very hard, so I think it's best to summarise in three words: refreshing, exciting, and innovative! If you are reading this and not sure whether to participate in a Summer School, I'd say GO 4 IT!"
Richard intends to read Music at university and has applied for a week's Summer School at Cambridge University
Victoria Haynes:
Through the Headstart course I went to Strathclyde University to look at Engineering. Whilst there, I met lots of new people with similar interests and aspirations and I had the opportunity to see what different engineering courses offered. My main interest lay in Architecture and I was shown around both the Architecture and Civil Engineering departments. As well as seeing what Engineering and Architecture is like at university and how students live, we were taken on team building courses where we went gorge walking! We had a very busy week but still found time to have a good time together.
Terrance Ayebale:
In July 2005, I went on a Headstart Engineering Science Course at Oxford University for one week. I had the opportunity to sample different aspects of engineering including Civil, Mechanical, Information and Electrical Engineering. For my industrial visit option, I chose to go to the UKAEA Fusion, Culham Science Centre, where we saw how energy is produced from the fusion reaction between deuterium and tritium using a particle accelerator. I also had the chance to speak to student graduates about their experiences of living and studying at Oxford University and the demands of the engineering course. Without Headstart and AimHigher offering me the opportunity to attend this course, I would have missed the chance of experiencing what I want to do at University and improving my chances of attending Oxford University full time.
Terence is currently holding an offer from St Anne's College, Oxford, to read Engineering Science in October 2006 Victoria is hoping to study Architecture at university in October 2006.
