Aim Higher, is one of several strands to the Excellence in Liverpool programme (which also includes Learning Mentors, Study Support and Gifted and Talented strands). Our goal is to help raise the aspirations of our students in Years 9 to 11, particularly those whose families have not previously experienced Higher Education, or students who encounter obstacles to achieving their full potential. With the help of our Graduate Mentor, we offer individual assistance to help students improve their grades at Key Stages 3 and 4 and thus increase their chances of gaining access to Sixth Form or Further Education courses.
Students in Years 9 and 10 may also participate in conferences and residentials at universities in the North West each year, whilst several Year 11 students have previously been awarded places at HE summer schools around the country. Three spent a week at the Royal Academy of Music and one student attended the Royal Veterinary College in London.
Aim Higher funding also helps our Sixth Form students identify the most appropriate Higher Education courses for their needs by providing greater contact with lecturers and students. This happens through various masterclasses, campus visits and student shadowing days at universities. These can be local, national or international, including Headstart science and technology courses throughout the UK and even language scholarships to France and Germany!
